012: Slurs are Not a Good Way to Market Yourself

Welp, we’re straight back to nonsense this week. If the entitled fan trying to slander Tracy Deonn last week wasn’t quite your flavor of scandal, then we’ve got “traditionally-published author ragging on romantasy and using slurs,” and I’m sure next week will have yet another flavor of bullshit and facepalmery hot and ready for you soon.

Most folks on Threads (my social media of choice these days) have been pointing out all the nuances better than I could. I hope there are real, actual consequences for this author; at the very least, she’s gotten herself a prominent place on quite a few folks’ Do Not Read list, and hopefully this leads to canceled engagements and difficulty finding representation/a publishing home in the future. I’d rather she did some introspecting and changed her ways, especially since she has the temerity to call herself an educator and activist. Based on her responses to folks calling her out (doubling down and crashing out), though, I find that unlikely.

I’m not going to pretend I’m perfect, not am I going to pretend that I’m a Perfect Specimen of Good Internet Citizenship. If this whole author thing takes off, I’m sure I’ll eff up somewhere along the line. I just hope that when I do, I react with a little more grace and humility. I tend to be stubborn and easily hurt. That’s no excuse for being an asshole, though. And DON’T BE AN ASSHOLE.
