023: Synopses. Synopsises? Synopssssss — Bah.

I have begun my Query Quest! In fact, I have submitted two over the past week. I realize that some authors send hundreds (which seems like a lot to me — am I being too picky with my criteria for who to query?) and I’ve definitely only just entered the query trenches. But to me, this is a big deal. I never thought I would ever get to a point where I was querying actual, live, really-for-real agents. But here I am!

Both of these agents passed on my manuscript, and both of them were very kind in their rejections. I’ve been keeping my spirits up by reminding myself that “whit’s fur ye’ll no go by ya!” and the point is to find the best fit for myself and the agent alike. Since I don’t have any queries currently active, I now have an opportunity over the weekend to regroup and consider whether my query package is as polished as it could be.

My friends…

My synopsis.

It is no bueno.

I’m pretty sure the synopses I sent out with those two queries were barftastic, to put it as eloquently as possible. This cannot stand. I now have a new goal: create a 1-page, 2-page, 3-page, and 5-page synopsis for submissions, all of which read smoothly, stay on target, and sound like I, and not a robot from a 1980s sci-fi B-movie, wrote them.

So it’s back to the drawing board for me, and maybe off to the Internet to find some sort of group or service that can help me polish the things. Querying is exciting, and I want to make sure that my query is fun and easy to read for an agent, even if it comes right back to me with a rejection. Whit’s fur ye’ll no go by ya, but holy buckets do I need to fix these before I try again.

See you back in the trenches, and hopefully soon!
